"The UAE has become one of the closest countries to us in the region. I am not even talking about the economy. Everything is in order there, trade is growing. It is already substantial and continues to grow. But this also applies to political co-operation and issues related to security," Putin said.
He also sent his best wishes to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, saying the two leaders remained in regular contact.
"We are in constant contact with him. Our officials travel to each other's countries, meet and discuss issues. We discuss the most important and pressing issues with him by phone. I am confident that despite all the difficulties of the present day, the situation will recover, and our relations will be preserved and will only grow stronger. There is no doubt about that," he said.
The two-day summit opened on Saturday under India's BRICS chairship, bringing together leaders and senior representatives from the bloc's 11 member countries.
The summit runs from September 12 to 13 under the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'.
