Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called on BRICS countries to turn the growing weight of the Global South into practical action as the bloc confronts economic, security and development pressures.
Speaking at the BRICS summit in New Delhi on Saturday, el-Sisi said the grouping could play a greater role in tackling interconnected crises affecting security, energy, trade and global supply chains.
He described BRICS as "a framework that brings together key countries in the Global South," capable of strengthening cooperation between developing economies and translating their collective potential into concrete projects.
El-Sisi said developments in the Middle East had again demonstrated the "close link between security and development", pointing to their impact on the global economy, trade, energy and supply chains.
He also stressed the importance of preserving the stability and freedom of international navigation, with Egypt occupying a strategic position on major global trade routes.
The Egyptian leader urged BRICS members to build on existing cooperation through "specific projects and programmes" supporting sustainable development, productivity and efforts to narrow development and technological gaps.
He also backed efforts within BRICS to reform the international financial system, expand concessional and innovative financing and strengthen the New Development Bank, as member states face mounting debt pressures and limited fiscal space.
He also said Egypt was ready to use its position linking Africa, Europe and Asia to support trade, investment and connectivity between BRICS economies.
At the conclusion of his speech, el-Sisi said Egypt looked forward to assuming the BRICS presidency "in the near future", while pledging continued cooperation with member states to turn the bloc's economic potential into tangible development partnerships
