02:53Chinese President Xi Jinping underlined the significance of Beijing-New Delhi ties in strengthening the voice of the Global South as he held bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the capital on Saturday.

"I express my gratitude for the support and cooperation received from China during India's BRICS presidency. Now we have the opportunity to discuss bilateral cooperation. Once again, a warm welcome to India," Modi told Xi.
Xi called for the two countries to approach their relationship from 'a strategic height and a long-term perspective', while advancing cooperation and promoting global development.
"In the face of a complex and turbulent international situation, China and India, as the world's two most populous countries and important members of the Global South, shoulder significant responsibilities," Xi said.
"We should keep the future of humanity in mind and put the well-being of our people first," he emphasised.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit, held under India's chairship in New Delhi from September 12 to 13.
Under the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability", India is pushing for closer Global South cooperation and a bigger voice for developing economies on the world stage.
It is the first time India has hosted a summit of the expanded BRICS, now made up of 11 members alongside 10 partner countries.
BRICS began with Brazil, Russia, India and China, holding its first leaders' summit in 2009. South Africa joined the following year, before the bloc expanded sharply in 2024 and 2025.
