"If we talk about recent years, there is the burden of sanctions, additional blows to logistics, the collapse of the payment system and the breakdown of supply chains. But together with our BRICS partners, we found answers to these challenges. It is very important that the nuclear bonds, if I may put it that way, BRICS' nuclear dimension is only growing stronger," he said on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday.
Likhachev pointed to Russia's work on India's Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, saying its first two Russian-built reactors were a significant part of India's nuclear generation and that Unit 3 was approaching its next commissioning phase.
"These are the two largest units among India's seven nuclear power plants. We are on the eve of the physical launch of the third unit. We hope that sometime in the spring, in February or March, it will move into the start-up operations stage. We have practically completed the delivery of our equipment. More than 99 per cent of the equipment has been delivered. <…> We continue consultations with the state atomic energy department. We expect a new group of partners. This will give us momentum in developing the Kudankulam projectб" he stressed.
Kudankulam, in India's Tamil Nadu state, is being developed with Russian technical cooperation and is planned to have six 1,000-megawatt reactors. Units 1 and 2 are already operating, while Units 3 and 4 are under construction.
The two-day summit opened on Saturday under India's BRICS chairship, bringing together leaders and senior representatives from the bloc's 11 member countries.
The summit runs from September 12 to 13 under the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'.
