Ethiopia entered 2019 under its own calendar on Friday, September 11. The country uses its own calendar, which runs seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar and has 13 months. The country celebrated the start of its millennium in September 2007.
"As for bilateral relations, we have already talked about almost everything, as you said, while travelling in the car. I would like to note once again that Ethiopia is a long-standing and reliable partner of Russia on the African continent. I am pleased to note that Russian-Ethiopian ties continue to develop based on the principles of equality and mutual benefit. I would like to thank you, Mr Prime Minister, for the significant personal contribution you are making to strengthening our ties," Putin said.
Putin also pointed to growing trade and long-standing educational ties between the two countries.
"We have achieved solid momentum in bilateral trade. In 2025, trade grew more than threefold and continues to grow. This is a good indicator. We attach great importance to humanitarian co-operation. More than 20,000 of your citizens have received an education in Russia, and this is a very good humanitarian foundation for the future," he added.
Putin added that Ethiopia makes a constructive contribution to the bloc's wide-ranging activities.
Ethiopia joined BRICS at the start of 2024, alongside Egypt, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, in one of the bloc's biggest expansions since its creation. Indonesia followed as a full member in 2025.
The two-day summit opened on Saturday under India's BRICS chairship, bringing together leaders and senior representatives from the bloc's 11 member countries.
The summit runs from September 12 to 13 under the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'.
