02:25Russian presidential aide and Chair of the Russian Maritime Collegium Nikolai Patrushev revealed the 'enormous potential' for joint ties as he held talks with Brazilian President’s Special Adviser on International Affairs Celso Amorim and the country's Defence Minister Jose Mucio Monteiro during his working visit to Brasilia on Wednesday.
"Brazil's maritime areas, which you are developing as part of the Blue Amazon initiative, hold enormous potential. <...> Russia is committed to the comprehensive development of its maritime policy, as reflected, amongst other things, in the establishment of the Russian Maritime Collegium. In this regard, it is very important for us to adopt a coordinated approach to our policy in the world's oceans," Patrushev said.
Footage shows the sides together, with Patrushev also seen arriving for a meeting with the defence minister and shaking hands with him.
During the talks, the presidential aide highlighted the prospects for co-operation in the maritime sector.
Celsu Amorim praised discussions with the Russian delegation and highlighted the wide range of topics covered during the talks.
"Yesterday we held a very productive working lunch - in my view, a highly substantive one - during which we were able to identify opportunities for co-operation in a wide range of areas. I understand that yesterday you also held bilateral meetings with a number of ministers and with the Commander of the [Brazilian] Navy, Marcos Sampaio Olsen. Today you are also due to meet with the [Brazilian] Minister of Defence, Jose Mucio Monteiro," the politician said.
Patrushev arrived in the Brazilian capital on Monday and met with Amorim and Maria Laura da Rocha, co-chair of the intergovernmental commission between the two countries. During the talks, the parties discussed the development of co-operation between the two countries' naval forces, as well as issues relating to international security in the world’s oceans.
