Russian Industry and Trade Minister Anton Alikhanov said trade between Russia and Indonesia has surged in recent years, as officials and business leaders gathered at the Innoprom International Industrial Exhibition in Yekaterinburg on Tuesday.
"Our mutual trade turnover has doubled over the past five years, reaching almost five billion dollars. Naturally, this is still not enough for countries like Russia and Indonesia, and today we discussed the areas in which we will build on our successes," Alikhanov said.
The minister said a free trade regime and deeper co-operation in high-tech industries could give economic ties between Moscow and Jakarta a fresh push.
"The free trade regime will help us streamline regulatory procedures, lower the costs for entrepreneurs in both countries by reducing tariffs and non-tariff barriers, and stimulate the growth of trade volumes. <...> I am confident that the Indonesian market has ample opportunities to utilise Russian advancements in digital technologies and artificial intelligence," he said.
Aleksandr Shokhin, President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, said relations between the two countries were entering a new phase, with joint manufacturing projects now a priority.
"Russian-Indonesian relations are now entering a new historical phase, and of course, a new institutional framework has been established. <...> It’s very important to move beyond simple trade, buying and selling raw materials, towards technological co-operation and joint ventures," Shokhin said.
The Innoprom International Industrial Exhibition is running in Yekaterinburg from July 6 to 9, with Indonesia taking part as this year's partner country. The annual forum brings together manufacturers, buyers and industry officials from around the world, offering a platform for new technologies, industrial partnerships and access to international markets.
