Next UN Sec Gen must be impartial... and refuse to take orders from any state - Lavrov04:01
Description

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the next United Nations secretary general had to be impartial and refuse to take orders from any nation, during a press conference following his meeting with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in Moscow on Monday.

"We want the Secretary-General to fully adhere to the requirements outlined in the UN Charter: impartiality, a firm refusal to accept instructions from any UN member, and, overall, the implementation of the tasks set out in the Charter - but not selectively, rather in their entirety," Lavrov noted.

According to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the current secretary-general [Antonio Guterres] 'does not meet these standards' and 'goes along with the West,' particularly regarding the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict.

For his part, Rahman thanked the Russian side for supporting his country's desire to join the BRICS organisation.

"Once the pause is over, we'd very much like Russia, and specifically you, to help us in getting our membership of BRICS," Rahman said.

Rahman was elected next president of the UN General Assembly last week.

The Bangladeshi foreign minister arrived in Moscow on an official visit on Sunday at the invitation of his Russian counterpart. The previous meeting between the two foreign ministers took place in September 2023 during Lavrov’s working visit to Dhaka.
