Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Friday at the plenary session of the SPIEF that due to short-sighted and aggressive policies, the European Union is damaging its own economy and destabilising global security.
"We can see the turmoil the energy markets are experiencing, how tensions are being provoked in certain regions - primarily in the Middle East at this moment - and how Europe’s short-sighted policies, coupled with aggressive rhetoric, are further weakening its position in the global economy. Moreover, it undermines regional and global security. In fact, the European elites are provoking chaos, into which they are trying to drag more and more countries," Putin noted.
The 29th St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) takes place on June 3-6. More than 20,000 people are set to attend, with politicians from around 76 countries making the journey. Since its establishment in 1997, the forum has served as a platform for international dialogue on global economic issues. Vladimir Putin has taken part in the event regularly since 2005.
