Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on Easter and Cosmonautics Day during talks in Moscow on Monday, as the two leaders discussed expanding bilateral co-operation.
"Many Indonesian children were named Gagarin or Yuri," Subianto said, referring to the legacy of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
He added that Moscow provides significant support to Jakarta on the international stage and thanked Putin for assisting Indonesia’s accession process to the BRICS group.
"One of the purposes of my visit today is to have the opportunity to consult with you on the current geopolitical situation," Subianto said.
According to the Indonesian president, the current global climate makes continued communication and co-operation between Moscow and Jakarta essential, particularly in economic and energy sectors.
"Some of these projects require further co-operation on our part. For my part, I am prepared to get personally involved in order to accelerate the implementation of these projects," he added. "This primarily concerns financial transactions. I am also prepared to do my part to expedite the process as much as possible."
In response, Putin described the visit as important for "strengthening and deepening bilateral ties" and thanked Subianto for his remarks.
"It is particularly gratifying to receive Easter greetings from the head of state of the country with the largest Muslim population in the world," Putin said. "We are a multi-faith country, and together with our brothers and sisters of other faiths, including Muslims, we always celebrate their holidays as well."
Subianto arrived in Moscow on April 13 for a working visit. According to the Kremlin, the talks covered the current state and future prospects of the bilateral strategic partnership, as well as key international and regional issues.
