Description

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that some governments are seeking to dominate how AI is used in the military, saying BRICS members will not accept any attempts to undermine their sovereignty, speaking in an interview on Monday.

"Some are now actively trying to introduce artificial intelligence into the military sphere. <…> But already there are attempts by some countries to subjugate, to create some kind of mechanism under their control and to subordinate to this mechanism everything that states do, can do, and have the right to do with artificial intelligence in the military sphere," he said.

"It is clear that countries such as the BRICS members will not allow such an infringement of their sovereignty," Lavrov added.

Lavrov also stressed that Russia was "remaining as open as India, China, Indonesia, and Brazil to co-operation with all countries", including the US, but stated that Washington was 'creating artificial obstacles' to partnership.

"It (the US) is already objectively losing its economic influence and its weight in the global economy. At the same time, countries such as the People's Republic of China, India, and Brazil are rising. Very interesting processes are taking place on the African continent, linked to the fact that Africans increasingly want to stop exporting their natural resources and instead build up their own industry. <…> The world is being reshaped. This is happening in a competitive struggle," he added.

The minister also underlined that Moscow was interested in working with its BRICS partners to 'create an architecture' that would "not be subject to the unlawful actions of any player on the Western flank".

"We are simply forced to seek additional secure avenues for the development of our financial, economic, integration, logistical, and other projects with the BRICS countries. <…> This is not directed against anyone, especially the United States. It is simply because the United States is exercising strict control over all processes in the areas I mentioned and demanding unilateral concessions," Lavrov noted.

BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates. It now covers over a third of the world's GDP and half the global population.
