Cameroon's Kimberley Process Permanent Secretary, Daniel Mackaire Eloung Nna, said that the creation of a precious metal exchange would help maintain the economic sovereignty of the BRICS member countries, speaking at the Moscow Financial Forum (MFF) on Thursday.
"This new instrument will undoubtedly save us a level of economic sovereignty for all member countries. Finally, Cameroon’s participation in this exchange will pave the way for enhanced competitiveness in the global precious metal market," he stated.
He also stressed that participation in trading on the precious metals exchange would create employment opportunities for young people, facilitate technology transfer and improve the regional workforce skills.
In turn, Luc Florentin Simplice Brosseni Yali, Central African Republic’s Kimberley Process Permanent Secretary, expressed the republic's full commitment to strengthening co-operation with the BRICS countries.
"The BRICS Exchange could serve as a direct bridge between our resources and the requesting countries, thereby generating more revenue and reducing losses associated with intermediaries. <...> "[We view] this BRICS Precious Metal Exchange project as a major opportunity to invigorate our mining industry and improve the living conditions of the Central African population," he added.
Russia proposed creating a BRICS precious metals exchange at last year's Kazan summit.
The Kimberley Process is an international certification scheme established in 2003 to prevent trade in so-called 'conflict diamonds', the proceeds of which are used to finance wars.
Since 2016, the Moscow Financial Forum (MFF) has been an annual platform for professional discussion on issues related to Russia's financial and economic policy. This year, the main topic of the anniversary forum is 'The Financial System: Challenges and Tasks'.
