Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian said in a press briefing on Tuesday that Beijing will continue to advocate for the preservation of the 'global economic and trade order,' following Monday's BRICS virtual summit.
"As the leading group of the Global South, the BRICS countries must uphold the BRICS spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, adhering to the 'three principles'; first, upholding multilateralism and safeguarding international fairness and justice," the spokesperson said.
Citing Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech at the summit, Lin stressed that the group must also continue "upholding openness and win-win cooperation and maintaining the global economic and trade order."
During the summit, the association's members discussed co-operation in trade and economy, finance, investment and other sectors.
"President Xi Jinping also profoundly expounded on the essence of the global governance initiative, emphasising that the BRICS countries must [...] actively promote the democratisation of international relations and reform and improve the global governance system to better address the common challenges facing human society," Lin added.
The virtual summit was convened at the initiative of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday. Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and others attended the videoconference.
BRICS was formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2006, with South Africa joining four years later. It has since expanded further and now surpasses the G7 in combined GDP.
