Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi put the Suez Canal at the centre of Egypt's message to the BRICS summit in New Delhi on Sunday, stressing its pivotal role in global trade and keeping international supply chains moving.
"The Suez Canal stands at the heart of this structure as a key pathway for international trade transit, underscoring Egypt's pivotal role in sustaining supply chain stability, strengthening efficiency and sustainability of global trade flow," Sisi said.
Addressing the 18th BRICS summit, the Egyptian leader called for stronger and more resilient economies as countries grapple with shifts in global trade and economic uncertainty.
"The accelerating shifts and ongoing challenges within the global economy highlight the critical need to develop more resilient economies by diversifying sources of growth, strengthening supply chains, investing in human and technology as well as expanding the horizons of co-operation among nations of the Global South," Sisi stated.
He called for greater co-operation in innovation, Artificial Intelligence, technology transfer and localisation, as well as energy, food, water and climate security. Sisi also pressed for developing countries to gain better access to the finance and technology needed to build more sustainable economies.
The Egyptian president also pushed for greater trade and investment between BRICS members and partner countries, including more joint ventures and a stronger role for development finance institutions such as the New Development Bank.
"Through the diversity of its members and partners, BRICS has a genuine opportunity to develop a practical model for South-South cooperation based on resilience, innovation, collaboration, and sustainability," he concluded.
The 18th BRICS Summit is being held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 under India's 2026 chairship, with the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'.
India's chairship is its fourth, and its first since the bloc expanded beyond its original membership. BRICS now comprises 11 members, alongside partner countries, and represents a major share of the world's population and economic output.
