Indian Education Minister Pralhad Joshi called for closer cooperation between BRICS countries to make education systems more resilient to pandemics, climate pressures, economic uncertainty and rapid technological change at the 13th BRICS Education Ministers' Meeting in Bhubaneswar on Friday.
"They (education systems) must continually evolve to meet the aspirations of each new generation and prepare our young people for the opportunities that may not even exist today," he said, highlighting the importance of cooperation and sustainability "because [...] none of us can address these challenges in isolation."
Noting that the expanded BRICS grouping brings together more than four billion people across different languages, cultures and development experiences, Joshi stressed diversity as a source of strength rather than an obstacle.
"Each member brings their own experience, knowledge, and solution to the table. BRICS gives us a platform where these experiences can be exchanged among equals and transformed into practical cooperation, and perhaps nowhere is the cooperation more important than in education," he said.
The bloc now includes 11 full members across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, accounting for nearly half of the world's population and 28 percent of global GDP, according to UN Trade and Development.
The Indian education minister also linked the agenda to India's push to give greater weight to Global South priorities, drawing a comparison with New Delhi's G20 presidency.
"Just as India brought inclusivity to its G20 presidency and placed the concerns of the Global South at the forefront of the agenda, similarly, during India's presidency of BRICS, we endeavour to advance this forum with a people-centric approach and spirit of humanity first," he stated, echoing Modi's remarks.
The 13th BRICS Education Ministers' Meeting was held as India chairs the expanded grouping in 2026. Talks focused on education cooperation, skills, research and stronger academic links between member states.
The Bhubaneswar meetings, held from August 5 to 7, also included talks between senior officials on closer educational cooperation across BRICS.
