Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that the war facing his country is not merely a conflict concerning Iran alone, but rather a “battle in defence of the new world” that BRICS countries are seeking to build in opposition to what he described as 'Western hegemony.'
“The battle Iran has fought is in defence of all of us, of the new world that we are building together," he told FMs during a BRICS meeting in New Delhi.
Araghchi said that Iran had faced “two brutal and unlawful aggressions” by the United States and Israel in less than a year, adding that the attacks were based on “false claims.”
"The truth is that Iran, like many other independent nations, is the victim of illegal expansionism and warmongering, regional instability is a lose-lose proposition for all sides, including the aggressors," he added.
Araghchi also noted that the Iranian people “didn't retreat from the principles of independence despite the bombings and pressures,” saying that Iranians “will not bow to any threat or pressure,” and that his country “emerges stronger and more united when under pressure.”
"There is no such thing as a military solution to anything related to Iran,” the FM added.
He called on the BRICS countries to take a clear stance against the "US and Israeli violations of international law," and that the group must play a leading role in building “more just, balanced, and humane global order.”
It comes as negotiations between Iran and the US have reached a stalemate after Donald Trump admitted earlier this week he hadn’t read Tehran’s latest proposal, which he called a 'piece of garbage'. He described it as a 'stupid' plan and 'nobody would take it'.
Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said it had been 'generous', and was only "demanding an end to the war, lifting the blockade and piracy, and releasing Iranian assets that have been unjustly frozen in banks due to US pressure."
The BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting is being held in New Delhi on May 14-15 under India’s chairmanship.
Ministers and heads of delegations from member and partner countries are expected to review two decades of BRICS cooperation and discuss political, economic, security, and humanitarian issues.
