BRICS bank created so Global South 'no longer passive receiver of foreign tax models' - NDB's Roussef at People’s BRICS Summit in Rio02:59
Description

Representatives from various countries met this Monday for the first BRICS Peoples Summit, an event held in Rio de Janeiro that aims to promote the participation of civil society in the development of cooperation proposals among the peoples of the Global South.

The Director of the BRIC Council of Experts, Victoria Panova, stated that the objective of the summit is "to achieve greater equity in the world" as well as "to reform" the global economy and governance. She explained that, as this is a citizens' summit, it is different from what is done in the G7, an informal forum that brings together seven economic powers: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

According to Panova, what is discussed among BRICS leaders is intended to benefit farmers, workers and ordinary officials "so that it does not become something like what we see with the G7, which is only a social gathering and a defender of elites," she said.

During the event, a video of former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff was shown, in which she spoke about the BRICS development bank, whose purpose was for the Global South to stop being "a passive recipient of foreign tax models."

In her message, Rousseff highlighted the work of the countries that make up the BRICS in the face of the global geopolitical reconfiguration. "The work of the seven thematic groups has enormous value. These are proposals that arise from the concrete experience of social movements and committed academia," she explained.

The BRICS Peoples Summit will conclude next Thursday, 4 December. In addition to the 11 countries that make up the bloc, another 10 nations are also participating informally. Among the topics to be addressed are economic cooperation, multilateralism and the dependence of emerging countries on the US dollar.
