The Chinese President Xi Jinping called on all BRICS member countries "at the forefront of the Global South" to act "in the spirit of openness, inclusiveness, and cooperation,” during his speech at the bloc’s virtual summit on Monday.
Xi said that his country is willing to work with other BRICS nations to promote high-quality cooperation among all members with the aim of “jointly defend multilateralism.”
He also denounced the fact that "hegemonism unilateralism and protectionism are getting more and more rampant” while “trade wars and tariff wars waged by some countries severely disrupt the world economy and undermine international trade rules."
Brazilian leader Lula da Silva stressed that "the BRICs is already a new name of the defence of multilateralism,” while his Egyptian counterpart el-Sissi criticised that “the international landscape is plunged in flagrant dualism in terms of double standards.”
BRICS was formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2006, with South Africa joining four years later. It has since expanded further and now surpasses the G7 in combined GDP.
